Dr. Sandra Beck, section head of colorectal surgery at UK, is serving her first term as a member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Board of Governors. She was officially confirmed at a national meeting of the ACS in March 2019. Dr. Beck joins Dr. Cynthia Downard, a Pediatric Surgeon with Norton Healthcare and UofL Health, as the two surgeons appointed to represent the Kentucky Chapter of the ACS on the board.

The appointment is the first time that Dr. Beck has represented Kentucky surgeons in this capacity. However, she is no stranger to positions of leadership. In addition to being a section head at the UK Department of Surgery, she is director of the General Surgery Residency Program.

“It is an honor to be an advocate and represent the concerns of Kentucky surgeons and my fellow colleagues at local and national meetings of the ACS,” Dr. Beck said.

The Board of Governors are the official communications link between Fellows of the ACS and the College’s Board of Regents. The Governors also elect the Regents, the body that formulates policy and direct the affairs of the ACS.

Governors are expected to attend local chapter, regional, and specialty society meetings and update them on ACS issues and official policies. Members also communicate the concerns of surgeons to the ACS leadership in national meetings, advocacy summits, and at the annual Clinical Congress.

Those elected as a Governor may serve two consecutive three-year terms and are eligible candidates for the Board of Regents.
