James Wharton, MD, has been selected to serve as the chief of the new dermatology division in the University of Kentucky College of Medicine Department of Internal Medicine, effective Nov. 3, 2025. He joins the College of Medicine as an assistant professor of medicine and will support the establishment and growth of the dermatology service line.

Dr. Wharton brings almost three decades of experience in dermatology, dermatopathology, and Mohs surgery in both academic and private practice settings, and is triple board-certified in dermatology, dermatopathology, and micrographic dermatologic surgery.

Dr. Wharton specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer and complex skin conditions, offering expert care backed by academic excellence and clinical precision. He provides comprehensive dermatologic care with an emphasis on early detection, individualized treatment, and surgical excellence.

He has extensive experience in the management of skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma); pigmented lesions, psoriasis, eczema, actinic keratoses, and other precancerous lesions; autoimmune and pigmentary skin diseases; acne, rosacea, and rare and complex dermatologic disorders. Additionally, he performs a wide range of dermatologic procedures, including Mohs micrographic surgery, skin biopsies, dermatopathology consultations, excisional and reconstructive skin surgery, and cryotherapy. 

After earning his medical doctorate from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Dr. Wharton completed his dermatology residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, where he later served on the faculty. He also completed specialized training in dermatopathology at the University of Texas Southwestern. Since then, he has worked in private practice for 10 years, as well as held faculty appointments at both the University of Louisville School of Medicine and the University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences.

His multiple board certifications, commitment to medical education, and passion for delivering exceptional patient outcomes make him a valuable addition to our growing dermatology team.
