The University of Kentucky College of Medicine is pleased to announce its selection of Amy Gewirtz, MD, as the official chair of its department of pathology and laboratory medicine. She has held this leadership role in an acting capacity for one year.

Dr. Gewirtz’s career focus over the past 28 years has been on the development and implementation of efficient processes and work products to improve operations, provide excellent diagnostic and clinical laboratory services, advance trainee education, and support research and scholarship.

As a professor in the clinical title series, she most recently served as executive vice chair of clinical operations, director of clinical pathology for the UK College of Medicine Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and the CLIA laboratory director for the UK HealthCare clinical laboratories.

"Dr. Gewirtz has been integral to the success of our pathology department, and her contributions will continue to shape its future,” said Dean Chipper Griffith, MD, MSPH. “With her vast expertise and commitment to our mission, she will be an exemplary chair helping her department promote excellent training and clinical care, transformative research, and an environment of professional growth.”

Dr. Gewirtz launched her pathology career as a hematopathologist, beginning her faculty tenure at the UK College of Medicine Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. She then spent 17 years at The Ohio State University and Wexner Medical Center, where she practiced medicine, taught, and oversaw laboratory operations. During her time there, she held key leadership roles, including vice chair of clinical pathology and chief operating officer for her department. In 2017, she returned to the UK College of Medicine faculty, bringing with her a wealth of experience in clinical practice, education, and laboratory administration.

Dr. Gewirtz has extensive experience managing interdisciplinary teams and instructing medical students, dental students, optometry students, residents, and fellows. She has received numerous honors for her teaching, including the UK College of Medicine pathology department’s annual resident and teaching awards.

She completed her Doctor of Medicine and post-sophomore fellowship at the University of Cincinnati, followed by post-graduate training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and Stanford University Medical Center, where she served as chief resident in clinical pathology.

Prior to Dr. Gewirtz’s appointment, C. Darrell Jennings, MD, chaired the UK College of Medicine Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine for more than a decade. The college is grateful for Dr. Jennings’ contributions to help the department get to where it is today. We also thank the search committee for its work in seeking a new leader to build off of this momentum.
