Shortly after joining the UK Department of Surgery faculty, Matthias Loebe, MD, performed a successful double lung transplant.
The patient, a Kentucky resident in his 60s, had been diagnosed with coalminer lung/black lung disease. The transplant was performed over the course of an evening in early May.
Naureen Narula, MD, served as pulmonologist in the case. Both specialists are members of the lung transplant team as well as faculty members with the division of cardiothoracic surgery. Michael Anstead, MD, is the medical director for the UK Center for Lung Transplant. Dr. Loebe, who joined UK Healthcare in March 2024, is the program’s surgical director.
