Department of Surgery welcomes four faculty plus a new chair in September

Barely a month after welcoming three new faculty members to the University of Kentucky, the UK Department of Surgery prepares to welcome four additional surgeons in September, including a new Department chair.

Barry Inabnet, MD, MHA, FACS: As has been reported previously, Dr. William Barlow “Barry” Inabnet, MD, MHA, FACS will step in as Chair of the Department of Surgery on Monday, September 16. As the Eugene W. Friedman, MD Professor of Surgery at the Mount Sinai Health System and the surgical director of the School of Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine, Dr. Inabnet is a recognized authority in minimally invasive endocrine surgery.

According to the August 2019 edition of UK HealthCare Vital Signs publication, Inabnet has built a distinguished career as a pioneer in minimal-access endocrine neck surgery, adrenal, and pancreatic surgery.

“At Mount Sinai in 1998, he performed the first endoscopic thyroid resection in the United States … via a transoral route which left no scar,” the Vital Sign article stated. Inabnet is also a leader in the field of minimally invasive metabolic surgery, with an interest in obesity, disorders of the endocrine system and beta cell metabolism

In addition to Dr. Inabnet’s anticipated arrival, though, the Department of Surgery is also adding Debra Bourne, MD (Hand Surgery, Plastic Surgery), Greg Charak, MD (Colorectal Surgery), Andrea Doud, MD (Pediatric Surgery), and General Surgery residency alum Zach Warriner, MD (Trauma, Acute Care & Critical Care Surgery).

Debra Bourne, MD: After earning her medical degree from Yale University, Dr. Bourne recently completed a plastic surgery residency and a hand and upper extremity fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Bourne has lead authorship on several peer-reviewed articles to her credit, including publications in The Annals of Surgery, Journal of Surgical Research, and, most recently, in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

In addition to her appointment as an assistant professor in the Division of Plastic Surgery, she is also a member of the UK Hand Surgery team and a member of the Hand Surgery Fellowship faculty in collaboration with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Greg Charak, MD, PhD: Dr. Charak completed a fellowship program in colorectal surgery this summer from the one-year program divided between Weill Cornell Medicine, Columbia University, and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

He completed the majority of his graduate medical education in General Surgery at Columbia University Medical Center in New York with an additional fellowship in Surgical Education. In 2016, he was given the Award of Excellence in Surgical Education.

Prior to earning his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Dr. Charak completed a doctorate in philosophy from University of California, San Diego.

Andrea N. Doud, MD: Dr. Doud finished a two-year Pediatric Surgery fellowship at the University of Louisville this summer and is one of two new, and very welcome, additions to the faculty in the Division of Pediatric Surgery at UK.

Dr. Doud served out her general surgery residency at Wake Forest University’s School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. During her residency, Dr. Doud served two years as a Bradshaw Research Fellow and a Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma Scholar. Her experience led to publications in major research journals on studies ranging from youth injuries in all-terrain vehicles to evaluating triage metrics for appropriate treatment of pediatric trauma patients.

She was also co-investigator in a two-year $100,000 National Science Foundation grant for a study on pediatric injuries for use in advanced automatic crash notification technology in automobiles.

Zach Warriner, MD, an alum of the UK General Surgery Residency program, is returning as a member of the Department of Surgery faculty after a fellowship in trauma, acute care, and critical care surgery at LAC+USC Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Dr. Warriner is a Kentucky native from Barbourville. He spent the majority of his academic career at the University of Kentucky before matching to the program on the southern California coast.

Additional faculty continue to arrive in October. In addition to Dr. Erin Burke, a surgical oncologist, the Department also celebrates the return of Dr. Hassan Reda, Cardiovascular surgeon with over 20 years of clinical experience.
