2018 College of Medicine Convocation Award
Each year the College of Medicine and the UK Area Health Education Center recognize a voluntary faculty preceptor that demonstrates commitment to providing quality education for UK medical students. Selection for this award is based on medical student evaluations, feedback from regional AHEC centers, and/or faculty recommendation.
The UK Voluntary Faculty Program is exactly that, a program that consists of health care providers that voluntarily open their practices to enhance our medical student’s clinical experience. Many of our voluntary faculty state they do this simply because they enjoy working with and teaching our medical students. Often they open their homes as well.
On November 9th, the University of Kentucky Area Health Education Center (UK AHEC) presented the 2018 Outstanding Community Preceptor Award Dr. Brett Muha who practices in Hazard, Kentucky, part of the Southeast AHEC region. Dr. Muha is a graduate of UK and completed residency at UK. He was initially appointed to University of Kentucky Voluntary Faculty in 2008 as an Associate Professor in Dept of Family and Community Medicine. Over the years he has precepted numerous medical students. Dr. Muha is committed to teaching UK CoM students as one of our most reliable and respected voluntary faculty.
A student who rotated with Dr. Muha recently had this to say about their experience:
“Dr. Muha is an excellent teacher; he explained his methodology and thinking at length, answered questions, and asked questions of me to assess my understanding. Furthermore the sheer volume of patients I saw with him did a lot to improve my confidence in my history-taking and physical exam skills. I now feel comfortable and capable of discerning abnormal heart and lung sounds, which I could not say before AHEC, simply because Dr. Muha let me listen to every single patient we saw together.”
On behalf of the University of Kentucky and the UK AHEC program, we want to express our sincerest appreciation for all Dr. Brett Muha does for our students.
