Biography
Zabeen Kaizar Mahuwala, MD, FAAN, FACNS, FAES is a board-certified neurologist with subspecialty certification in epilepsy through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She completed her fellowship training in Clinical Neurophysiology at the University of Texas at Dallas before joining the University of Kentucky in October 2016 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology. She currently serves as the Fellowship Director for the Clinical Neurophysiology Program.
Dr. Mahuwala specializes in the care of adults with epilepsy and neuromuscular disorders, with a particular clinical and academic interest in neuroimmunology as it pertains to the peripheral nervous system. She is actively involved in clinical research trials for immune-mediated neuromuscular disorders, including myasthenia gravis and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP).
Her epilepsy practice focuses on patients with both generalized and focal epilepsy, with special expertise in the management of drug-resistant epilepsy, as well as the care of women and older adults with epilepsy. She performs outpatient electroencephalography (EEG) and inpatient long-term monitoring for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Her neuromuscular practice includes the evaluation and treatment of immune-mediated neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis, peripheral neuropathies, and myositis. She also performs electromyography (EMG).
Dr. Mahuwala is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Epilepsy Society, the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society, and the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine. She actively serves on national committees focused on education and research within these organizations.
She chairs the Department of Neurology’s Resilience and Wellness Committee and leads several quality improvement initiatives focused on reducing physician burnout and enhancing workplace well-being.
Dr. Mahuwala has received multiple awards in recognition of her dedication to education and innovation, including the 2019 Abraham Flexner Medical Education Excellence Award, the 2020 Excellence in Medical Education Award for Mentorship, the 2024 Award for Innovation and Development, and the prestigious A.B. Baker Award for Excellence in Medical Education from the American Academy of Neurology. She also serves as a reviewer for the Institutional Review Board at the University of Kentucky.
