The University of Kentucky STEM Through Authentic Research and Training (START) program recently closed out its summer session, with START Apprentices gaining tremendous insight into research careers and higher education.
Standing before a classroom of college juniors, orthopaedics resident Cristina Rivera-Ramirez, MD, skillfully interpreted an X-ray of a distal radius fracture in a patient’s arm. The next step was to reveal how to treat it. By the time she got out the supplies to demonstrate making a splint, students were at the edge of their seats, ready to volunteer.
Liz Arnold, PhD, LCSW, is a new faculty member who brings years of experience as a behavioral intervention researcher. She recently joined the University of Kentucky College of Medicine faculty and is prepared to use her expertise to help bolster its clinical research enterprise.
Christine Kuhn is a Lexington-based artist who created “Interconnectivity,” a mixed-media art piece that displays in the Medical Center Library. The artwork was created with support from the Herman Lee and Nell Stuart Donovan Memorial Trust.

Darwin Conwell, MD, MSc, the Jack M. Gill Endowed Chair in Internal Medicine, will serve on a panel at The B.I.G. Symposium 2023: Health Equity at the Forefront. This event is part of the inaugural Gut Health Summit presented by the Association of Black Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists (ABGH) ahead of Digestive Disease Week.
Josh Musalia’s uncle, an orthopaedic surgeon in Kenya, served as his inspiration for going to medical school. Musalia was moved by what his being a doctor represented: people counted on him, he was a valuable member of the community, and he served as a go-to for medical expertise.
Musalia aspired for that same meaningful patient interaction as a physician.
Erin Camac, DO, FCCP, is an associate professor of medicine, as well as a pulmonologist and critical care medicine physician. She said that within her specialty, women are underrepresented. “The principle ‘you can't be what you can't see’ is very true in these environments,” Dr. Camac said. “I am very lucky to have come to my field with the help of amazing female mentors.”
In 2021, researchers and educators from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and Markey Cancer Center developed an idea for a program to diversify the health care workforce, particularly in cancer research.
About 2,200 miles away from his hometown and alma mater in Lexington, Ky., Paul Hennig, MD, is using his UK College of Medicine education to promote patient-centered health care for underserved communities.
