March is designated as Women’s History Month. To celebrate, we are highlighting women who have made history here at the College of Medicine. Their contributions are diverse, spanning significant research breakthroughs to exemplary patient care and education. 

Jerika Durham is a PhD candidate in the department of toxicology and cancer biology. Durham, who grew up in eastern Kentucky, is not only the first person in her family to pursue such a degree, but the first to attend college at all. 

UK Innovate will host its second annual Kentucky Innovator Challenge (KIC) on April 11, 2024, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. ET, in Ballrooms 212 A&B within Gatton Student Center. 

DanceBlue is the University of Kentucky’s student-run organization that raises funds for the DanceBlue Kentucky Children's Hospital Hematology/Oncology Clinic. The yearlong fundraising culminates in a 24-hour dance marathon. This year’s event will be April 6-7, 2024. 

First-year medical student Chloe Obert is disciplined. She enjoys structure and does not shy away from a challenge. It is why becoming a doctor was a natural career path. But Obert’s road to medicine was nontraditional. When searching for the right undergraduate degree, she felt called to another passion – ballet.

Cheavar Blair, PhD, completed his doctorate in physiology at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in 2017. In 2022, he was recruited back to the department as an assistant professor in the research title series.

When Laneshia Conner was in graduate school, an instructor told her that she had great questions. From there, she says she began to find that she had more questions than answers. Carl Watson, MD, made history as the first Black graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He earned his doctorate in 1964 as a member of the college’s first graduating class, and his impact in medicine continued through a decades-long career as an obstetrician and gynecologist.
