What can narrative medicine learn from storytelling? This lecture will look to narrative theory, oral history, and children's literature to deepen our understandings of narrative in medicine. It will examine questions like, whose story is it? This lecture will delve into issues of narrative humility examining our responsibilities to stories as listeners. 

Background: Sayantani DasGupta, MD, MPH, is a senior lecturer in the discipline of narrative medicine at Columbia University. Originally trained in pediatrics and public health, she is co-author of Principles and Practices of Narrative Medicine (Oxford) and her work has appeared in journals including The Lancet, JAMA, Pediatrics, The Hastings Center Report, Literature and Medicine, Teaching and Learning in Medicine, and The Journal of Medical Humanities.
