Career and Professional Development Session "How to Build and Maintain Collaborations"
Presenter: Ilhem Messaoudi, PhD, professor and chair, microbiology, immunology, and molecular genetics
The past couple of decades have witnessed a dramatic shift away from individual principal investigators writing grants and directing research in individual labs to a greater emphasis on collaborative initiatives. This is likely a response to the increased complexity of scientific research that is best addressed through “Team Science”. Indeed, team science approaches can lead to greater scientific impact, innovation, and productivity not to mention a greater sense of accomplishment and satisfaction amongst the team members. However, finding the right collaborators and maintaining productive relationships with partners can be sometimes challenging. In this session, you will learn more about the guiding principles for: How to identify collaborators, How to establish ground rules and alignment, and How to maintain trust and a shared vision over time
