One-Year Fellowship in GI Pathology

The University of Kentucky Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers a one-year fellowship in Gastrointestinal, Hepatic, and Pancreatobiliary Pathology, providing advanced diagnostic training alongside opportunities for clinical and translational research. The GI and liver services encompass a comprehensive range of adult and pediatric gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary diseases, with an annual volume of approximately 10,000+ GI cases and 1,200 liver and pancreatobiliary specimens, including native liver biopsies, transplant biopsies, resections, and referral consults. The University of Kentucky serves as a major tertiary care center for Kentucky and the surrounding region, including liver transplant pathology, and is recognized for its expertise in inflammatory bowel disease, Barrett esophagus, celiac disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, autoimmune and cholestatic liver disorders, and hepatobiliary neoplasia. The fellowship provides comprehensive experience in the evaluation, processing, and interpretation of biopsy and resection specimens from the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, and biliary system, supported by immunohistochemical and molecular diagnostic tools. With an active liver transplant service, fellows also develop substantial expertise in assessing transplant-related liver resections and follow-up biopsies.

Research opportunities are available within the department and in collaboration with Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Transplant Surgery, Oncology, and Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry. Ongoing research programs include investigations into the molecular basis of inflammatory bowel disease, mechanisms of liver injury and repair, hepatocarcinogenesis, and diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in GI and hepatobiliary neoplasia, in association with the Markey Cancer Center. Opportunities for involvement in educational research and national collaborative pathology initiatives are also available. Opportunities are present for teaching at the medical student level for the interested fellow.
