Didactic Core Conference

The didactic conference is based on the core curriculum. The curriculum consists of topics included in PSEN, CoreQuest, and other reference books to reflect the full spectrum of the practice of plastic surgery. Each conference begins with a review of recent in-service questions pertinent to the topic.

Each week a resident will be assigned to: 

1. Review 3-5 in-service questions
2. Present a PowerPoint
3. Review a CME/MOC article
4. Present a case or second article

Hand and burn topics will be interspersed throughout the year.

Wednesday Morning Didactic Conference (Plastic Surgery Grand Rounds)

Plastic surgery grand rounds will consist of the following:

• Pre-Op Conference - This is an integral part of the Wednesday morning didactic conference as it permits an open and more or less extensive discussion of upcoming cases on the service. The didactic modality will be Socratic in nature and will simulate in many ways the performance of an oral examination. The program director will be available to assist with selecting cases. The Chief Resident will provide the assignments to the respective residents with sufficient advance notice so that the resident can read and prepare appropriately for the discussion. The attending assigned to the case is responsible for moderating the discussion. Pre-operative photographs and other pertinent graphic material should be provided for this portion of the conference.

• Monthly CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) - This conference will consist of presentation of cases that resulted in complications and/or death.  The list of patients that are to be discussed is to be compiled by the chief resident.  The resident participating in the original operation, which resulted in the complication, will be responsible for presenting the patient.  Preoperative, pertinent intraoperative, and postoperative photographs are expected.  

• Attending Presentations/Guest Lecturers - These conferences will take advantage of the expertise of our own faculty and faculty within the UK College of Medicine, as well as prominent outside lecturers.  

• Quarterly Research Meeting - Each resident will give a brief (5 minute) summary of their active research project(s), in order to demonstrate the progress made since the last meeting and to receive advice and feedback from faculty.  This is an excellent time to get input when developing a study or work through any obstacles that you may be experiencing with an ongoing study. 

Plastic Surgery Journal Club

An internal journal club will occur every other month in place of core conference. 

The second Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. is a community journal club hosted in turn by community and University Plastic Surgeons. The previous month's issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery will be discussed. Reading/discussion assignments and location of the meeting will be made by the host for the month.
