As the University of Kentucky College of Medicine works to strengthen its collaborations and clinical research processes, we have created a new research leadership position to oversee these important advancements.
The assistant dean for clinical research infrastructure will help bridge the gap between important health care solutions and patient care at the bedside. This position will enhance the processes for clinical trials to promote efficiency and innovation.
The UK College of Medicine has selected William Stoops, PhD, to serve in an acting capacity within the Office of Research. Dr. Stoops is an alumnus of the UK College of Arts and Sciences and has served on the UK College of Medicine faculty for 17 years.
Dr. Stoops will leverage his extensive experience in clinical trial and research contracts to assist the UK College of Medicine Office of Research in addressing gaps in these processes. Further, Dr. Stoops’ knowledge will support the Office of Research’s efforts to bolster the UK College of Medicine clinical research infrastructure.
Dr. Stoop’ experience includes leading the Clinical Research Support Office for almost five years, aiding investigators in clinical research by reducing administrative burdens, ensuring compliance, and more.
He is the William R. Willard Professor of Behavioral Science, with joint appointments in the departments of psychiatry (College of Medicine) and psychology (College of Arts and Sciences). He also serves as an associate director of the UK Substance Use Research Priority Area.
Dr. Stoops has been a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded researcher since 2008. His innovative work evaluates the behavioral and pharmacological factors contributing to drug use disorders, with a focus on stimulants. He has led numerous clinical trials and human laboratory studies.
In 2013, he was named the Joseph Cochin Young Investigator by the College on Problems of Drug Dependence, where he serves as treasurer. He was also named the 2016 Psychologist of the Year by the Kentucky Psychological Association.
