In this discussion Dr. Rivas will talk about her experiences including transitioning from academia into industry and the interview process.

Jackie Rivas is a research scientist in R&D at Kite Pharma in Santa Monica, California. Kite develops CAR T cell therapies for B cell malignancies, and is known worldwide as the first company to produce an FDA approved CAR T cell therapy called Yescarta (first approved in 2017). Jackie obtained a BS in biochemistry from Iowa State University in 2012, and studied structural interactions between proteins downstream of the TCR with NMR spectroscopy. She then went to UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where she studied antibody genetics and B cell responses in multiple sclerosis. She obtained her PhD in immunology from UTSW in 2017. She then moved to Kentucky and joined the laboratory of Dr. Subbarao Bondada for post-doctoral training and studied T cell antitumor immunity in chronic lymphocytic leukemia. During this time she obtained small research grants from the NIH and American Society of Hematology, and fellowships from the NIH and Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. In December 2021 she accepted an offer from Kite, and started as a research scientist in January 2022.
