Ophthalmology Residency

First year residents (PGY-2) begin with an orientation program designed to introduce diagnostic and management skills needed for the evaluation of ophthalmic disorders frequently encountered during call situations and in clinics. The first year schedule includes four 3-month rotation blocks that take place at the Kentucky Clinic Eye Center and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. In addition to a wide variety and large volume of clinical exposure, the schedule incorporates extensive surgical training and post-operative management. Residents will also spend 1.5 months on a staffed inpatient and emergency room consult block with a third year resident serving as a back-up. This block also allows dedicated research and administrative time. First year residents are expected to take home-call on an average of every fifth night throughout the year.

Second year residents (PGY-3) have 3-month rotations including the Kentucky Clinic Eye Center, Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Baptist Health Lexington. In the second year, residents perform a wide range of surgical procedures and gain extensive exposure to all ophthalmology sub-specialty fields. Residents will spend 1.5 months on a staffed inpatient and emergency room consult block. This block is followed by a 1.5 month refractive block that allows exposure existing and emerging refractive procedures as well and pre and post surgical management of these patients. The refractive block also has dedicated research and administrative time. The call schedule in the second year is home-call every fifteenth night throughout the year.

Third year residents (PGY-4) also have 3-month rotation schedules including the Kentucky Clinic Eye Center, Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Baptist Health Lexington. Residents will complete the bulk of their cataract training during the VA rotations and crown their subspecialty exposure throughout the year. A 1.5 month elective block affords opportunity for dedicated research time as well as additional subspecialty training, off site rotations and/or international electives. Third year residents take back up call on an average of every fourth night during the year.
