Outstanding Support Group

The Hazard and Surrounding Area Stroke Survivor and Caregiver Support Group was awarded the Outstanding Support Group Award on April 23, 2020 as part of the as part of the annual Stroke Hero Awards that is hosted by the American Stroke Association. This award honors a stroke support group committed to educating, inspiring and bringing awareness about stroke on a local or national level. Learn more about this award on the American Stroke Association website. 

Voters' Choice Award

Mark Kincaid, a native of Letcher County and member of the Hazard and Surrounding Area Stroke Survivor and Caregiver Support Group, was awarded the Voters’ Choice Award on April 20, 2020, as part of the annual Stroke Hero Awards that is hosted by the American Stroke Association.

Mark was among eight finalists nationwide for the Voters’ Choice Award, which honors an individual or group making an outstanding effort to educate, inspire and bring awareness about stroke on a local or national level. For two weeks, community members and supporters rallied behind Mark to cast their choice in the public vote from March 19 through April 2.

At the age of 42, Mark experienced an ischemic stroke as a result of undiagnosed high blood pressures. Doctors gave little hope that he would recover, but Mark defied the odds and now, he does not let his physical limitations stop him from living his life.
