UK College of Medicine Psychologist

Medical students have access to a dedicated psychologist for consultation services and individual therapy. Psychological services and records are confidential and remain separate from academic records. The UK College of Medicine never receives any report about which students utilize these services. Dr. Hopkins is a licensed psychologist who has worked at the University of Kentucky for more than 10 years. She also has multiple years of experience in other settings and institutions. Dr. Hopkins is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, and has lived in many places across North America. She completed her graduate work as an international student in Canada, where she earned her degrees from the University of Calgary. She also completed a portion of her training in Newfoundland as well.

Dr. Hopkin’s research and clinical interests are in the areas of depression and anxiety, and the treatment of these disorders in graduate and international student populations in particular. She utilizes an interpersonal approach with Third Wave Cognitive-Behavioral theory and techniques, including mindfulness, relaxation, and exercise-based activities. Dr. Hopkins is excited to be of support to UK College of Medicine learners. “I look forward to getting to know you, and helping you move toward your goals and values, in the most fulfilling way possible,” she said.

The Woodland Group

The Lexington Medical Society Physician Wellness Program is a partnership with the Woodland Group and the UK College of Medicine to provide counseling services to students and residents at all UK College of Medicine campuses with 24/7 availability.

The Woodland Group includes seven licensed psychologists. Steven Smith, PhD, and Sandra Hough, PhD, are program coordinators and serve as points of contact. The Woodland Group maintains a confidential file for each student and resident, but no insurance will be billed, and the UK College of Medicine will not receive any information about those who utilize the program. As such, this program is completely confidential. Students and residents have access to eight free visits per calendar year.

The Woodland Group is located at 535 W. 2nd Street, Suite 207, and also offers tele-mental health visits.

  • Call the confidential hotline at 800-350-6438, and leave a message in either Dr. Smith’s or Dr. Hough’s voice mailbox.
  • They will call you back to schedule an appointment. It’s that simple!
