Dr. Haley Wehder

Haley Wehder, MD, loved birthday parties. So much so, that after only one year of knowing resident Conor Malloy, MD, she threw an elaborate surprise party for his wife.

Though not a “birthday party person” himself, Dr. Malloy couldn’t help but smile that Dr. Wehder went the extra mile for someone she only knew a short time.

A new program beginning this fall at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine will provide opportunities for recent college graduates interested in research, who may not have had the resources to pursue it.

Brittany Levy, MD, was recently appointed to a committee within the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Her new role will allow her to help improve the clinical learning environment for graduate medical trainees across the country.

Charles “Chipper” Griffith III, MD, has been named dean of the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. 

Pending approval from the Board of Trustees, Griffith will begin his appointment July 15, 2023. He has served as acting dean of the college since July 2021.

Standing before a classroom of college juniors, orthopaedics resident Cristina Rivera-Ramirez, MD, skillfully interpreted an X-ray of a distal radius fracture in a patient’s arm. The next step was to reveal how to treat it. By the time she got out the supplies to demonstrate making a splint, students were at the edge of their seats, ready to volunteer.

Olivia Henderson, MD, said that beyond “tubes and tonsils,” she did not know much about otolaryngology when she started medical school. During her third-year surgery clerkship at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, she discovered her dream career while working within the specialty.

“It felt like after just one day on that service that I never looked back,” she said.

Matthew Coleman has been named director of the Kentucky Office of Rural Health (KORH) at the University of Kentucky Center of Excellence in Rural Health (UK CERH), effective July 1, 2023.

Eastern Kentucky native Misty Manning was born on the crisp fall day of Oct. 22 in 1982 at the original University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Medical Center. When she was young, her family moved to Daytona Beach, Florida, where she spent much of her childhood before one day moving back to the state that holds her heart: Kentucky.

Dr. Ginny Gottschalk

The University of Kentucky College of Medicine is excited to select physician and dedicated Kentuckian Ginny Gottschalk, MD, as the new chair of family and community medicine.

Dr. Gottschalk has served as acting chair of the department for nearly a year. She is an associate professor in the clinical title series and has been part of the department faculty since 2014.

William Stoops

William Stoops, PhD, a professor in the University of Kentucky College of Medicine’s Department of Behavioral Science, Psychiatry and Psychology, is one of 16 University Research Professors for 2023-24.

Dr. Omar Al-Janabi

Omar Al-Janabi, MBChB, PhD, MS, initially arrived in Lexington, Ky., for a master’s program and an affordable place to live with his family. Nearly a decade later, he has completed not one but three graduate training programs at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He also has engaged with mentors who will have a lasting impact on his career in medicine and research.

The University of Kentucky Center of Excellence in Rural Health (UK CERH) will host the 2023 Kentucky Rural Telehealth Summit Thursday, Sept. 28. The one-day event will be held in person at Embassy Suites on Newtown Pike in Lexington.
