More than 7,000 University of Kentucky employees, retirees and spouses have purchased a Fitbit through UK's recent promotion. It is just one way the university is helping the community improve their well-being. The promotion continues through Jan. 31.

"Walking more is an attainable goal," said Allison Walters, a UK employee for almost 20 years. "The Fitbit is a true benefit to my health because it keeps me in tune with how I'm doing."

Why?

That's the question John Charles constantly asked his parents as a boy. His father was a trained geologist, but he struggled to answer his son's barrage of questions about nature. So he made sure young John had plenty of books about science and space and encouraged him to find the answers.

Registration is now open for the third annual International Society of Neurogastronomy symposium, which will be held at the University of Kentucky on March 2-3, 2018.

 Both day's events offer continuing education credit.

This year's symposium will explore the connection between brain and behavior in the context of food.

The 10th Annual Hardin Award was presented to Shelby Meier, a trainee in Dr. Joe Abisambra's lab, on December 15, 2017 during the Physiology Holiday Party at Kroger Field's Woodford Reserve Club. The Hardin Award is dedicated to the memory of Brian Hardin, a Physiology lab technician and graduate student, who passed away in 2007. On the trophy, it is inscribed “Brian Hardin was a graduate student and technician in the Department who made good physiology fun and challenged everyone he met to only bring their best game.

On December 12, 2017 Yuan Wen successfully defended his dissertation and earned his PhD. With the basic science research portion of his MD/ Ph.D. program complete, Dr. Wen will now return to the clinical side to continue working towards his MD. Congratulations Dr. Wen!

On October 3, 2017, Cheavar Blair successfully earned his Doctoral Degree. By doing so, he has become the first African-American male in the history of the Department of Physiology to be awarded a PhD. Congratulations Dr. Blair!

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept.. 8, 2017) -- Abstracts are being accepted for the 2017 Annual Kentucky Neuroscience Clinical-Translation Research Symposium, which will take place Sept. 29, 2017 at UK's Albert B. Chandler Hospital Pavilion A Auditorium. The symposium provides basic, translational and clinical neuroscience investigators an opportunity to discuss their work, share progress and develop collaborations. The symposium will include a scientific poster session and four theme-based platform sessions, each with short (10-minute) talks selected from abstract submissions.
