UK College of Medicine and Albert B. Chandler Hospital celebrated Resident Appreciation Day on February 25, 2021. It was a day that our residents across all specialties were recognized for their contributions to our hospital and our community. Two of our Emergency Medicine residents, Dr. Nick Fahey and Dr. Wes Barnett, were acknowledged by their colleagues on campus.
On May 7, 2021, the UK Emergency Medicine family gathered together to celebrate the impressive career of Dr. William F. Young, Jr. The North Carolina native has served the Lexington area and beyond as a staple in the UK ED since 1996.
Under his tutelage as faculty member, he trained 180 emergency medicine resident physicians.
February 26, 2021 is Resident Appreciation Day at UK - at least the formal day. It goes without saying that we are grateful to our resident physicians year-round. At times, they are simultaneously the eyes and ears, hands and feet, and faces of our department. Their work ethic is unmatched and the care they show for their peers and patients alike is known hospital-wide.
The UK College of Medicine chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) commemorated Black History Month by curating educational information about the Black community's impact in medicine. On February 19th, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion circulated a newsletter featuring the perspectives and insights of Black physician-leaders at the UK.

We’re excited to introduce a new Critical Care track focus for our WildcatEM residents! We recently introduced two new faculty members, Drs. Terren Trott and Aaron Tyagi, who are trained in emergency and critical care medicine. They are rolling out an EM CC track open to residents starting from the end of their PGY1 year and carrying through longitudinally with residency.
University of Kentucky Department of Emergency Medicine is pleased to announce the addition of a Pediatric EM Fellowship starting in July 2021. One fellow will be accepted into the 3 year position under the leadership of Dr. Landon Jones, Program Director. The fellowship is based in the Makenna David Pediatric Emergency Center at UK, a verified Pediatric Level I Trauma Center.
As protests around the country turned violent last summer, the use of riot control agents garnered national attention. Dr. Peter Akpunonu, Director of Toxicology at UK, along with 4th year medical students Ben Doty and Haedan Eagar, took this time to educate the masses about the agents used in controlling crowds.
The COVID-19 pandemic has placed significant stress on resources within Emergency Departments across the country. Providing adequate standards of care, minimizing staff exposure, and improving patient outcomes are some of the many challenges that are currently being faced.
On December 11, 2020, the FDA issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine. Mere hours later, five employees from the UK Chandler Emergency Department received the first vaccine doses on campus. Among UK's First Five was Dr. Charles Eckerline, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and the first physician to be administered the vaccine.
At UK Chandler Emergency Department, “teamwork” is more than just a buzzword. A multidisciplinary approach is integral to how we provide high quality care to our patients and robust learning opportunities to our residents and students. One of the most important forces at work in our ED is the collaboration between our gifted team of pharmacists and physicians.
This year’s residency application season is unlike any other that has come before it, and many students are navigating the season with brave faces that hide nervous hearts.
Puncture wounds are penetrating injuries caused by a pointed object. Puncture wounds with or without a retained foreign body are a common presentation to the ED. Plantar puncture wounds account for the majority of these injuries. Nails are the most frequently seen objects in puncture wounds, but other items such as needles, glass, wood, plastic, and metal are common causes as well.
"It is estimated the half of Americans will be bitten by either an animal or another human at some point in their life. The true incidence of mammalian bites is unknown, however, it is estimated that 2 million Americans are bitten every year and that about half of these come to the Emergency Department.
UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital celebrated Emergency Services Week 2020 from October 12th – October 16th. One of the many activities planned for this week included the Emergency Services Annual Awards, where staff from the Emergency Department recognized their peers for the outstanding service they provide to our patients. This ceremony was held on October 13, 2020 in the Pav A Auditorium.
Dr. Jacob Avila was named one of EMRA's 25 under 45 Emergency Medicine Physicians whose contributions embody the spirit of the specialty. We are lucky to have him on our team!
Congratulations Ella Muhovic for being awarded University of Kentucky's "Top Performing Work Group" Award! This will be the fourth year in a row our team has received this award.
