LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 11, 2022) — Rob Brooks is from Bedford, Kentucky, a town of fewer than 600 people in Trimble County. He grew up knowing that rural areas like his hometown are typically underserved in regard to health care, so he planned to become a doctor who could be part of the solution.

The University of Kentucky Center of Excellence in Rural Health and the UK CCTS Community Engagement and Research Program are requesting applications for the 2022 Community Leadership Institute of Kentucky (CLIK). CLIK is a hybrid 8-week leadership development training program offered in Hazard, Kentucky. It is designed to enhance research and capacity-building competencies in community leaders, senior staff, directors and administrators.

Graduates of Healthy WAY and the Community Leadership Institute of Kentucky (CLIK) were honored by the UK Center of Excellence in Rural Health (UK CERH) on National Rural Health Day, November 18, 2021.  Six CLIK graduates and four graduates of Healthy WAY showcased their research projects during a hybrid event with over 40 people attending.

Each year University of Kentucky Center of Excellence in Rural Health partners with the Kentucky Rural Health Association (KRHA) to host a poster session at the KRHA annual conference. Our goal is to encourage those doing research in rural Kentucky to highlight the impact their work has or could potentially have on policies at the local, state, and national levels. Our goal is to help ensure the research is addressing rural issues at a policy level and creating change.

College of Health Science students at the UK Center of Excellence in Rural Health-UK Hazard Campus donned purple in support of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. UKPT and UKMLS Hazard Campus students wore purple to support survivors of interpersonal violence.

This week, the UK DPT Hazard Class of 2023 participated in their PT Day of Service project building safe recreational trails for the community at the Perry County Park. Students worked with Ben Braman of the Pathfinders of Perry County Kentucky, a non-profit organization that promotes community engagement, recreation, and education for Perry County.

The University of Kentucky College of Medicine has received the 2021 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.

The University of Kentucky Center of Excellence in Rural Health (UK CERH) and UnitedHealthcare honored Perry County students Jazmen Fugate and Jayla Ledford for becoming the first two certified community health workers (CHW) as part of the Students Striving Toward Better Health in Self and Community initiative.

On June 16, a virtual “Trauma Informed Care Summit” was held in partnership between Save the Children, the Kentucky River Health Consortium and University of Kentucky Center of Excellence in Rural Health. Among the topics discussed in the summit were how different risk factors and life choices can impact the development of a child.

 HAZARD, Ky. (May 21, 2021) — Researchers at the University of Kentucky Center of Excellence in Rural Health (UK CERH) and the Walsh Center for Rural Health Analysis at the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago have released a report detailing the findings of a study conducted to understand possible factors that contribute to Eastern Kentucky leading the nation in declining overdose mortality rates.
